tags.pub

tags.pub is a global hashtag server for the Fediverse. You can follow an account like example@tags.pub and it will boost all the content tagged #example from across the Fediverse.

Following a hashtag globally

To follow a tags.pub hashtag in Mastodon, go to the Search input box at the top of the page, and search for the name of the tag with "@tags.pub" at the end. So, for "#bloomscrolling" search for "@bloomscrolling@tags.pub". That should bring up the account on tags.pub to follow.

To stop following the hashtag, you can search for the hashtag and click "Unfollow". You can also go to your list of Following accounts, find the relevant tags.pub account, and click Unfollow there.

Please note that following a hashtag on your Mastodon server is different than, and independent from, following the same tag on tags.pub. Turning on one won't turn on the other, and vice versa.

Posting with a hashtag

If you post a note, image, video, audio, or article publicly on the Fediverse and include a hashtag, the content will be boosted by the hashtag account at tags.pub. You should get a notification of the boost in your Mastodon or other Fediverse server. tags.pub will never boost any followers-only posts or direct messages; in fact, you server will not send them.

If you edit the hashtags of your content, the tags.pub accounts for the tags you add will boost the content, and the accounts for the tags you remove will undo the boost. You'll get a notification of it either way.

If you delete your content, all the tags.pub accounts that boosted it will un-boost it.

If you make a post with a hashtag, and it isn't boosted by tags.pub, it probably means that your server is not connected to tags.pub. Check with your server administrator.

Connecting a server

tags.pub uses multiple sources of content for boosting.

The first is open relays. These are specialised servers on the Fediverse that are used to extend the reach of Fediverse servers. tags.pub subscribes to the relays and boosts any public posts it sees that have hashtags in them. If your server already participates in a well-known open relay, like those listed at relaylist.com, it should already be included -- or will be soon.

If your relay is being used by tags.pub and you want us not to, please let us know (see "Contact" below).

The second data source is Fediverse servers that opt in to extend their users' reach by participating in tags.pub directly. They use tags.pub as a relay, instead of one of the other available relays. Note that unlike most relays, tags.pub does not share all public data with all servers -- the follow and boost mechanism described above is used instead. So, content flows in just one direction across the relay interface.

Server administrators can add the tags.pub relay in their server preferences. For Mastodon servers, add https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____/inbox. For Pleroma and compatible servers, add https://tags.pub/user/_____relay_____. (That's the word "relay" with five underscores in front and after, to distinguish it from an actual hashtag!)

Disabling and/or deleting the tags.pub relay account from your server settings should stop any further content from going to tags.pub.

If your Fediverse server does not use the Mastodon or Pleroma relay interfaces, and you want to provide a data feed to tags.pub, please add an issue to GitHub.

Privacy

This section describes how your content is distributed and stored by tags.pub.

tags.pub is not a search engine or content repository. We do not store the content of posts, image or video or audio files, descriptions of files or alt text, or any of the metadata of the content. We do not have a search index based on any content received.

tags.pub does store Announce (aka boost) activities for each content item a hashtag account shares. These activities do have metadata, like timestamps. tags.pub uses block-respecting boosts; the activity only includes the link to the content, and not the content itself. If an account you blocked, or an account on a server you blocked, follows a tags.pub account, they should not be able to see your content.

tags.pub stores Undo activities for deleted content or content that was edited.

tags.pub is built and operated by the Social Web Foundation, a US-based non-profit dedicated to making the Fediverse better for everyone. tags.pub is hosted on servers in Beauharnois, Quebec, Canada owned by OVHcloud, a French company.

Server logs for tags.pub are purged within 90 days; usually much less.

The Social Web Foundation does not sell or share data from tags.pub with any company or organization.

tags.pub is Free and Open Source software. We invite security and privacy researchers, and any other interested people, to review the code at https://github.com/social-web-foundation/tags.pub for details about how data is used. tags.pub uses the activitypub-bot framework, which is also worth reviewing.

If you have any questions about any of these data handling issues, or you think there are important topics that are not covered here, please reach out using one of the Contact methods below.

Opting out

We think that tags.pub is mostly harmless, and for most people it should provide a net benefit. However, we also believe that everyone deserves to control how their content is used.

If your server is providing data to tags.pub, and you don't want your content to be boosted by tags.pub accounts, you can add the #NoTagsPub hashtag to your account bio. (If you've already got a #NoBots hashtag in your account bio, we'll also skip any boosts.)

At the extreme end, you can also block the tags.pub domain, which should prevent tags.pub from seeing your content at all. This has the unfortunate side effect that you can't follow tags.pub accounts, though!
